BACKGROUND:VolunteerMatch is a national, nonprofit dedicated to connectingvolunteers with volunteer organizations that need their help. Anyone inthe U.S. can enter their ZIP code at VolunteerMatch.org to generate a list of volunteer opportunities and get involved right away.Since 1998, VolunteerMatch has made over 2,000,000 volunteer matches, and nearly 40,000 charitable organizations currently post theirvolunteer opportunities with VolunteerMatch. It is important to note that, as a nonprofit, VolunteerMatch's servicesare free for volunteers and nonprofit organizations that needvolunteers. Our funding primarily comes from national foundations likeSurdna, Carnegie, Hearst and Atlantic in the form of philanthropic grants, and through partnerships with companies like Dell, Nationwide and Target; businesses dedicated to making it easier for their employees to volunteer using our established and extensive network of volunteer opportunities and organizations. GULF COAST VOLUNTEERISM:In a typical month, our national nonprofit volunteer referral service,VolunteerMatch, generates about 1,000-1,500 volunteer matches a day. However, in the several weeks immediately following the hurricane we were averaging 3x as many matches, or 3,000 per day. In fact, our highest volunteer match weeks ever set newly established in September, and it is also now our monthly record, with nearly 78,000volunteer matches made. (The previous highest month was 55,000+ inJanuary, post tsunami.) If our post disaster experience is any indication, we will see a steady, sustained increase in volunteer referral rates/activity levels over the coming year. This happened after 9/11, after the tsunami, and we expect it to happen again.
